About Evelyn Reiss, Director
Over the years I have assessed and provided
programs for an increasing number of children and adults who present
with weak written expression. Many of these students dislike writing
intensely or feel uncomfortable with written assignments, therefore,
they avoid writing as much as possible and the weakness compounds.
As a writer I analyzed the processes involved in producing my
own work and it became clear that fluent, effective and accurate
writing could be taught through a system involving Direct Instruction,
scaffolding and multi-sensory techniques. To further this vision
I have established The Writing Studio where all aspects of writing
are taught to students from Grade 1 to postgraduate level and
workshops are held on a wide variety of educational topics.
My academic background in the Sciences, Arts
and Education has given me insight into the challenges of writing
in different disciplines; I have a Bachelor of Science in Physiology,
a postgraduate degree in Teaching English as a Second Language
and Biology,
a Specialist in Special Education and a Master of Arts in Psychology
and Curriculum Studies. I am a member of the Ontario College of
Teachers with qualifications in the Primary, Junior, Intermediate
and Senior divisions. I am a member of the Board of Directors
of The Ontario Branch of the International Dyslexia Association
(ONBIDA). I have co-authored a book on nutrition entitled “Stay
Healthy in Later Life,” edited ESL textbooks and worked
as a freelance journalist.
As an Education Consultant, Reading and Writing
Specialist and classroom teacher, I have over 17 years experience
helping children and adults with many different skill levels,
which range from Learning Disabled to Gifted. My methodology is
an amalgamation of my experience in the field and education in
science and linguistics. Training in the Orton-Gillingham approach
to reading and spelling has helped me to program for a comprehensive
continuum of language skills.
